    How environmental sustainability labels affect food choices: Assessing consumer preferences in southern Italy

    This paper assesses consumer preferences and willingness to pay for three different environmental sustainability labels (EU Organic Farming, Rainforest Alliance, ‘Per il Clima-Legambiente’) and information cues about the origin displayed on a processed food product, namely tomato puree. Using a choice experiment and conditional logit models, the results show that: i) preferences for the environmental sustainability labelled product increase when consumers have proper knowledge about the meaning of the labels; ii) the information cue about the product’s domestic origin is important for all consumers, regardless of their education, unlike environmental sustainability labels that are more appreciated by well-educated consumers; iii) consumers’ willingness to pay is higher for labels with greater market penetration, regardless of certification by private or public organisations. Findings suggest that the adoption of environmental sustainability labels by food producers should be combined with effective information policies aimed at increasing consumer awareness

    ESSAYS ON BORROWING-CONSTRAINED AGENTS IN A DSGE MODEL

    This thesis is an attempt to contribute to the literature on New-Keynesian Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium models with heterogeneous households. In this respect, the economies are characterized by the presence of savers and borrowers that interact in the credit market. Borrowers and savers are modeled using a modified version of the mechanism proposed by Bilbiie, Monacelli and Perotti (2012). They indeed differ in their degree of impatience: both agents are intertemporal maximizers - since borrowing and lending take place in equilibrium; and, financial markets are imperfect. Particularly, we focus on the interaction between fiscal and monetary policy and their redistributive effects. More in the detail, the thesis is composed of three papers. In the first paper, we study the dynamics of the model in response to five shocks, under three different assumptions on the labor income tax rates: a) equal taxes, both agents face the same labor income tax rate; b) partial redistribution, both agents pay a tax but the tax rate on borrower labor income is lower than the tax rate on saver labor income; c) full redistribution, saver labor income is taxed while borrower labor income is subsidized at the same rate. In the analysis of expansionary fiscal policy, public debt increases more in a context of partial redistribution than in a context of full redistribution, due to the internalization of government budget constraint by savers. In addition, a negative saver tax shock has a negative impact on redistribution, which is exacerbated under partial redistribution. Finally, a negative borrower tax shock has a negative impact on redistribution when borrowers receive subsidies, because savers are completely discourages to save. In the second paper, following Gal\uec (2014), we study the effects of a shock to government purchases under two alternative financing regimes: (i) monetary financing; (ii) debt financing. Particularly, we focus on the redistributive effects of the two regimes and we find the following. Both regimes imply a redistributive effect from savers to borrowers, measured in terms of the ratio between the consumption of borrowers and that of savers. The redistribution is much greater in the money-financed fiscal stimulus, where the consumption ratio is more than three times higher than the implied one in the debt-financed fiscal stimulus. Borrowers are better off also in terms of their relative labor supply. Finally, with respect to the representative agent model, the presence of borrowers enhances the impact of the fiscal intervention on aggregate output, when spending is debt financed. Remarkably, with respect to Gal\uec (2014) the same regime implies a reduction of the debt burden instead of an increase. In the third paper, using a Bayesian likelihood approach, we estimate the model presented in the second paper to analyze the main driving forces of output developments in United States.     SlicerAstro: a 3-D interactive visual analytics tool for HI data

    SKA precursors are capable of detecting hundreds of galaxies in HI in a single 12 hours pointing. In deeper surveys one will probe more easily faint HI structures, typically located in the vicinity of galaxies, such as tails, filaments, and extraplanar gas. The importance of interactive visualization has proven to be fundamental for the exploration of such data as it helps users to receive immediate feedback when manipulating the data. We have developed SlicerAstro, a 3-D interactive viewer with new analysis capabilities, based on traditional 2-D input/output hardware. These capabilities enhance the data inspection, allowing faster analysis of complex sources than with traditional tools. SlicerAstro is an open-source extension of 3DSlicer, a multi-platform open source software package for visualization and medical image processing. We demonstrate the capabilities of the current stable binary release of SlicerAstro, which offers the following features: i) handling of FITS files and astronomical coordinate systems; ii) coupled 2-D/3-D visualization; iii) interactive filtering; iv) interactive 3-D masking; v) and interactive 3-D modeling. In addition, SlicerAstro has been designed with a strong, stable and modular C++ core, and its classes are also accessible via Python scripting, allowing great flexibility for user-customized visualization and analysis tasks.Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, Accepted by Astronomy and Computing.     On the asymptotic behaviour of solutions to the fractional porous medium equation with variable density

    We are concerned with the long time behaviour of solutions to the fractional porous medium equation with a variable spatial density. We prove that if the density decays slowly at infinity, then the solution approaches the Barenblatt-type solution of a proper singular fractional problem. If, on the contrary, the density decays rapidly at infinity, we show that the minimal solution multiplied by a suitable power of the time variable converges to the minimal solution of a certain fractional sublinear elliptic equation.Comment: To appear in DCDS-

    We investigate existence and nonexistence of stationary stable nonconstant solutions, i.e. patterns, of semilinear parabolic problems in bounded domains of Riemannian manifolds satisfying Robin boundary conditions. These problems arise in several models in applications, in particular in Mathematical Biology. We point out the role both of the nonlinearity and of geometric objects such as the Ricci curvature of the manifold, the second fundamental form of the boundary of the domain and its mean curvature. Special attention is devoted to surfaces of revolution and to spherically symmetric manifolds, where we prove refined results

    New Insights into Bile Acids Related Signaling Pathways in the Onset of Colorectal Cancer

    Colorectal cancer (CRC) ranks as the second among the causes of tumor death worldwide, with an estimation of 1.9 million new cases in 2020 and more than 900,000 deaths. This rate might increase by 60% over the next 10 years. These data are unacceptable considering that CRC could be successfully treated if diagnosed in the early stages. A high-fat diet promotes the hepatic synthesis of bile acids (BAs) increasing their delivery to the colonic lumen and numerous scientific reports correlate BAs, especially secondary BAs, with CRC incidence. We reviewed the physicochemical and biological characteristics of BAs, focusing on the major pathways involved in CRC risk and progression. We specifically pointed out the role of BAs as signaling molecules and the tangled relationships among their nuclear and membrane receptors with the big bang of molecular and cellular events that trigger CRC occurrence

    Narrative review of cardiac computed tomography perfusion: insights into static rest perfusion

    Cardiac or left ventricular perfusion performed with cardiac computed tomography (CCT) is a developing method that may have the potential to complete in a very straight forward way the assessment of ischemic heart disease by means of CT. Myocardial CT perfusion (CTP) can be achieved with a single static scan during the first-pass of the iodinate contrast agent, with the monoenergetic or dual-energy acquisition, or as a dynamic, time-resolved scan during stress by using coronary vasodilator agents. Several methods can be performed, and we focused on static perfusion. CTP may serve as a useful adjunct to coronary CT angiography (CTA) to improve specificity of detecting myocardial ischemia. Technological advances will reduce the radiation dose of myocardial CTP, such as low tube voltage imaging or new reconstruction algorithms, making it a more viable clinical option. The advantages of static first-pass non-stress perfusion are several; the main one is that it can be done to each and every patient who undergoes CCT for the assessment of coronary artery tree. Future advances in CTP will likely improve the diagnostic accuracy of CTP + CTA, and will better estimate the severity of ischemia Therefore, it is simple and comprehensive. However, it has several limitations. In this review we will discuss the technique with its advantages and limitations

    Coronary atherosclerosis as the main endpoint of non-invasive imaging in cardiology: A narrative review

    The change of paradigm determined by the introduction of cardiac computed tomography (CCT) in the field of cardiovascular medicine has allowed new evidence to emerge. These evidences point towards a major role, probably the most important one in terms of prognostic impact, in the detection, characterization and quantification of atherosclerosis as the main driver and endpoint for the management of coronary artery disease (CAD). Extensive literature has been published in the last decade with large numbers and patients’ populations, investigating several aspects and correlations between atherosclerotic plaque features and risk factors; also, the relationship between plaque features, both with qualitative and quantitative approaches, and cardiovascular events has been investigated. More recent studies have also pointed out the relationship between the knowledge and classification of sub-clinical atherosclerosis and the induced modification of medical therapy (both aggressiveness and compliance) that is most likely able to increase the effect of anti-atherosclerotic drugs, hence significantly improving prognosis. Non-invasive assessment of CAD by means of CCT is becoming the primary tool for management and also the most important parameter for the comprehension of natural history of CAD and how the therapies we adopt are affecting plaque burden as a whole.     Treatment with PCSK9 Inhibitor Evolocumab Improves Vascular Oxidative Stress and Arterial Stiffness in Hypercholesterolemic Patients with High Cardiovascular Risk

    Atherosclerosis and atherosclerotic-related cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD) are characterized by high serum levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) that can promote the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). To answer the need for better LDL-C control in individuals at high and very high risk for CVD, a new injectable innovative family of lipid-lowering (LL) monoclonal antibodies against the protein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) has been approved. However, the effect of these drugs on vascular function, such as ROS generation and arterial stiffness, has not already been extensively described. In this report, we present data from 18 males with high to very high CV risk undergoing LL treatment (LLT) with either statin and ezetimibe or ezetimibe monotherapy, who experienced, after a 2-month treatment with Evolocumab, a significant improvement in blood pressure (BP)-adjusted carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) (p-value = 0.0005 in the whole cohort, p-value = 0.0046 in the sub-cohort undergoing background LLT with statin and ezetimibe, p-value = 0.015 in the sub-cohort undergoing background LLT with ezetimibe monotherapy), which was significantly associated with a decrease in freshly isolated leukocytes (PBMCS)-derived H2O2 production (p-value = 0.004, p-value = 0.02 and p-value = 0.05, respectively, in the whole cohort, in the statin + ezetimibe sub-cohort, and the ezetimibe sub-cohort). Our observations support the role of systemic oxidative stress in atherosclerosis and give a further rationale for using Evolocumab also for its effect in vascular disorders linked to oxidative processes
